Artist Statement
This project focuses on illustrating reptiles and their native environments in an elegant art nouveau-inspired style. The reptiles chosen consist of the Red Tail Boa Constrictor, shown in the branches of the Colombian jungle, the Jackson Chameleon, native to mountain forests of Kenya and Tanzania, the Bearded Dragon, found in central Australia and the Crested Gecko which they can be found in the rainforests of southern New Caledonia. Each illustration features plants from these regions as well as includes design details that hint at other information about the reptiles such as their sleep habits and their diets.
The goal was to depict reptiles in a manner that is beautiful. Popular opinion of these creatures would rarely associate them with beauty, but I wanted to change that false narrative. Each of these reptiles is special to me, representing pets that I have come to love and appreciate for their unique needs, quirks, and beauties. I hope my work can shed light on these species and change a few minds about their perception.
